ST ABBS Head is the scene of a pivotal moment in a book which has been lapped up by critics all over the UK.
And you can get your hands on a copy this week as the woman responsible, Sally Hinchcliffe is going to be doing a signing at Crossing The Bar book shop in Eyemouth on Tuesday November 3.

'Out of a Clear Sky', Sally's first foray into the writing world, is a gripping psychological thriller about obsession, loss, and quite unusually, birds! It was selected as BBC Radio 4's Book at Bedtime and Simon Mayo's Book of the Month when it was published earlier this year.

The book tells the tale of Manda; when her partner leaves her for another woman, she draws comfort from the hobby they once shared – bird-watching.

Through this solitary pursuit, Manda finds comfort and escapes the loneliness she succumbs to, as her friendship group slips away along with her boyfriend.

Soon she starts being stalked by David, another birdwatcher, and in distress, runs into the arms of her husband's best friend, Tom, who is besotted by Manda.

As the harassment increases, she is forced to flee with details of her own complicated past and dark family history start to emerge.

And Sally thought that St Abbs Head was the perfect place for one of the story's most memorable moments.

"The reserve at St Abbs Head is a place I'm very familiar with. I used to visit it a lot when my parents retired to Hutton and with 'Out of a Clear Sky' being centered around birdwatching, I thought it would be a great setting for the story.

"The scene set at St Abbs Head comes at an important point in the plot. Manda stands at the edge of the cliffs and thinks about her mother who took her own life. Hopefully people will be able to visualise her looking out to sea. To me St Abbs Head is a place that feels like the edge of the world."

Birdwatching isn't something you'd commonly associate with a page-turning thriller but Sally said it was the whole concept of being watched and having your every move tracked by someone that lent itself so well to her novel.

She continued: "The book is all about stalking which is basically what people do when they go birdwatching.

"It's the whole idea of not realising that you're being watched and the story starts when Manda find a birdwatching notebook, but instead of notes on birds' movements, it contains a record of hers."

Writing is something that runs in the Hinchliffe family, and Manda's father Peter, who now lives in Duns, has also been putting his own skills to good use of late by compiling 'Spectres on the Landscape', an anthology of verse with contributions from people throughout Berwickshire.

Sally said: "It was quite daunting writing my first book but my dad has been a big inspiration to me. Writing poetry is something that we always did as a family when I was growing up. My dad would write things about his work and we'd all join in from there.

"He is very excited about the book being released and he's been going into bookshops and making sure that they've got it in stock and it's in a good position on the shelves!"

Taking into account Sally's family connections with the area and the fact that St Abbs Head is featured in the pages of 'Out of a Clear Sky', it's fitting that she will be signing copies in Eyemouth, and Sally said she is really looking forward to it.

"It's going to be nice to be able to bring the book to an audience who may not have been familiar with it and it'll be good to go and see my parents too.

"I'm hoping people will really enjoy 'Out of a Clear Sky'. With the stalking theme it really had to be a thriller and some of my friends have told me they've been completely gripped by it and had to stay up all night to find out what happens!"

To meet Sally and get your hands on her debut page turner, get yourself along to Crossing The Bar at 12 noon on Tuesday.

'Out of a Clear Sky', is out now, published by Pan and priced at £6.99.
