BORDERS choir Abbey Consort are staging a special musical event in Melrose Parish Church on Remembrance Sunday, November 9 to support the charity Help for Heroes.

The charity raises funds for Headley Court Rehabilitation Centre in Surrey, where wounded service personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are being treated. It has the backing of the head of the army, General Sir Richard Dannatt, and works closely with the service charities, especially the Army Benevolent Fund.
In a departure from their usual repertoire the choir, which includes members from all over the Scottish Borders including Berwickshire, will perform two 20th century works which are particularly appropriate for this occasion: Michael Tippett's A Child of our Time and Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem.
Musical director Colin Fox said: "This is a concert that I feel particularly committed to for reasons not connected to the music! I served in both Aden and Malaysia during my twelve years in the Royal Air Force and I am only too well aware of the sacrifice made by our servicemen, servicewomen and their families in the current theatres of war. Added to my personal involvement is the fact that my granddaughter's husband will begin his fifth tour in Iraq in the New Year – may God bless them all!"
As always, the Abbey Consort orchestra, a group of talented instrumentalists drawn from all parts of the Borders, will accompany the choir.
The performance begins at 7.30pm. Tickets £10, (£8 concessions) include a glass of wine at the conclusion of the concert. Serving members of the armed forces and accompanied children are free. Tickets available from choir members or at the door. For information contact Alison Fraser on (01835) 850208.
