MOVE over boys - there are a group of girls who are making quite a name for themselves on the local rock scene.
Yours Sincerely, which is made up of school friends Millie Stokes (drums), Penny Osborne (lead guitar & vocals), Jade Carnall (bass guitar) and Josie Taylor (vocals), have been going down a storm at a number of gigs over the past few months, including Rock for Haiti at The Maltings.

The girls first came up with the idea of forming a band a few years ago and after realising they'd be stupid not to take advantage of the fantastic music department at the new Berwickshire High School, Yours Sincerely finally became a reality.

But what about the fact that they're all girls? Millie said that they are working hard on breaking down any stereotypes people may have.

"There is no-one else in this area that we know of who are doing what we're doing," she commented. "We did one of our first gigs at school and the teacher who introduced us said 'it's a girl band but they play instruments!'"

Lead singer Josie added: "A lot of people were shocked as they expected us to being playing sugary pop music but we class ourselves as a band not a group and we're not that girly anyway- we definitely don't wear a lot of pink!"

You're likely to hear members of Yours Sincerely humming away to the sounds of classic rock, and they aren't afraid to throw a few of their favourite tracks into their own set.

"It is always easier to do covers of other people's songs because you and the audience are already familiar with it," said Penny.

"We like to challenge ourselves and do songs by the like of Led Zeppelin that people definitely wouldn't expect us to play."

Jade added: "And if by hearing us do cover versions, people then go and listen to originals by The Beatles and The Small Faces that's great as it means their music is being appreciated by a younger generation."

But Yours Sincerely are no tribute act, their slot at Rock at Haiti consisted mainly of original material and they're keen to keep making more of their own music.

Millie continued: "We get a lot of inspiration from the artists that we listen to but writing songs isn't always that easy as we usually get sidetracked and end up talking about other stuff! Having a recording studio at school has been fantastic and all our music teachers have been very supportive- we get a lot of practice in at lunchtimes!"

Josie added: "We'd love to make a CD of our own and hopefully we can help put Berwickshire on the map for having a great music scene. We went to see Eyemouth band Atmostheatre at The Barrels last week and they were amazing and then there's Berwick bands like Mustafa & the Lord and The Warehouse Announcement - we'd love to do more shows with them."

Well, that's one particular wish that is about to be granted as Yours Sincerely are on the bill for Rock The Benefit at Berwickshire High School tomorrow (Friday), alongside Mustafa & the Lord, The Warehouse Announcement, Atmostheatre, The Mocking Birds and The Click. Entry is £5.
