THE last week in July looks set to be a massive one for music in Berwick.

The extremely popular Battle of the Bands competition will be resurrected after a three year absence and if that wasn't enough The Maltings will host its very own 'Rock School'-style iniative, with a number of young people already signed up to get their first taste of the music industry and the chance to play on the venue's main stage.
Both of these events are the brainchild of Brian Martin and his team at The Music Gallery in Tweedmouth who are determined to make them a big success.
The action kicks off on Friday July 24 with a showcase of some of Berwick's most recognised unsigned acts. Taking to the stage with be Klyptonite, The IPAS and The Briganties. All of the bands feature members who have previously won Battle of the Bands in other guises and they will be looking to set a good example to the new breed of musicians who will be showcasing their musical finesse over the following days.
Eighteen bands are being invited to bid for a slot in round one of this year's Battle of the Bands competiton which will run from 12 noon-10pm on Saturday July 25. A panel of industry experts, with help from The Maltings audience, will whittle the numbers down leaving six for the grand final on Sunday July 26 from 6.30-10pm.
And the prize for the winners is something that will make their rivals turn green with envy. Whoever emerges victorious has the choice of £1000 studio time at PFL Audio to create a four or six track demo or a single and video.
The idea behind this is that the winning act have something they can send out to record labels to try and secure a future beyond the competition.
The second and third placed acts don't go home empty handed either, taking home £100 and £50 worth of Music Gallery vouchers respectively.
There has been some keen interest in the competition already and acts that have entered so far are: Plain & Dirty, By Any Other Name, Atmostheatre, Warehouse Announcement, Captain Yellow Shirt, Robert Knox & Wise, Inversion and Little Brave.
From up and coming acts to relative beginners, the conclusion of Battle of the Bands 2009 will mark the start of a six day initiative designed to uncover and nuture some of Berwick's hidden musical talent.
Aspiring musicians from the age of 11-19 can enrol at the Border Academy of Music where they will get their first experience of the music industry from rehearsing a live set, photo shoots and even getting a new image!
There are 30 places on the course and Brian Martin said the idea was to bring together people from different musical backgrounds to create five bands who will work together for the week before giving their debut performance on The Maltings stage on Saturday August 1.
The aim is to get a real melting pot of styles amongst the acts so one might go down a rock route while others may pursue a more reggae or jazz style.
So whether its keyboards, bass guitars, drums, woodwind or vocals that's your forte why not throw your talent into the mix?
Some top class tuition will be on hand to guide youngsters through the course and if it's not necessarily the performing side of things you're interested in there's also an opportunity to learn more about rock photography or take a trip behind the scenes and get trained up in the ins and outs of sound engineering and stage lighting.
Brian said he is confident that both events will be a big success for the town and after lending his support to acts like The Briganties and The IPAs, he is hoping to uncover some hidden gems to work with in the near future.
"Battle of the Bands and the Borders Music Academy are two things that I've been working really hard on and I'm determined to make them successful.
"The Battle of the Bands competition used to be big news in Berwick. The 2005 winners, This Side Up, had a huge local following and could pack venues out. Members of the group have since joined other acts like The Briganties and Klyptonite and that was the idea behind putting the showcase on this year before the competition starts. There are guys performing on the night who know what it's like to compete and win Battle of the Bands so it's fitting that they open the weekend for the newcomers."
"Every act taking part in the competition will get a 20 minute slot to impress the judges with their own songs or their twist on some well known hits. They will be awarded points for originality or how well they cover a song and the gauntlet has been thrown down to all musicians from eight to 80."
Brian continued: "The Borders Music Academy is a pilot project but I hope that it will be a success so that we can run it annually during the school summer holidays.
"I guess the ultimate aim is to have a permanent Academy in Berwick with a base in the town but I think that's a few years away yet."
The Borders Music Academy will open its doors 10.30am-4.30pm Monday, July 27-Saturday, August 1 and the cost for the course is £150. Anyone who wants more information should visit www.futureofmusic.co.uk or contact Brian Martin at brian@themusicgallery.co.uk or on (01289) 308030.
