A GRIEF-STRICKEN driver who killed a Greenlaw baby girl by smashing into a horse transporter when his drinks level was twice the legal limit was jailed for two years at the High Court in Edinbutgh on Wednesday.
Seven-month-old Ella Grace Leith died after suffering a "devastating" head injury in the collision while strapped into her child seat in the rear of a car.
Driver James Brown (31), of Long Birgham Cottages, Birgham, survived the crash but was said
to be so overcome with guilt that he has attempted suicide.
Also in the car were girlfriend Emma Tibbits - the baby's mum - and her four-year-old son Jack.
At an earlier hearing first offender Brown admitted causing Ella's death by driving carelessly while exceeding the blood alcohol limit on the A697 Coldstream to Greenlaw road.
Brown told police he must have gone over the other side of the road and lost concentration because he was searching for his cigarettes or mobile phone.
His blood alcohol count was 161 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrammes.
Brown tried to commit suicide by attempting to drown himself in a river and according to police was "almost successful". Since the accident, the court heard, Brown finds it hard to get into a car and cannot return to his job as a panel beater because it brings back traumatic memories.
Lord Uist banned him from driving for four years and ordered him to sit a driving test again.
