Coldstream pub mascot goes missing
Model thought to have been stolen during Civic Week

LAST week marked yet another successful Civic Week for Coldstream and as the sun was setting on 2008's event pubs around the town were packed out with people celebrating the final day.
But Saturday August 9 has left a sour taste in the mouth of one publican. Ian Sproule, owner of The Commercial Inn has been left disappointed following the theft of his pub mascot - a 12 inch model of a Jack Russell.
The dog has been a permanent fixture in the pub since Ian and his family moved in 18 months ago and Ian is upset that someone has taken it.
"A number of locals have joked that they'd try and kidnap the dog one day but never had done," said Ian. It must have been about 11.30pm on Saturday when one of the bar staff noticed it had gone missing and I have to say I was quite shocked.
"I wasn't working behind the bar myself that night as I was busy collecting glasses, refilling stock and tidying up outside. I didn't see anyone taking it and I've asked around locally and no-one seems to know anything about it."
Like any pub on a Saturday night, The Commercial was packed full of customers, including a large contingent from other areas such as Duns, Kelso and Berwick who'd travelled to Coldstream to enjoy the last night of Civic Week festivities. And Ian hopes that someone out there will either return the dog or explain how it came to leave the pub.
"Once I'd realised the dog had gone missing I went outside and along to the Eildon Centre as that's where the right hand man was having his party. I asked around there but no-one had seen anything and I also spoke to some passing police officers but they hadn't seen anything either.
"There must have been about 50-60 people in the pub that night so I'm hoping someone will have seen something is. It was quite a boozy night though so I'm not sure if people will remember!
"The pub was really busy on Monday but quietened down on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before picking up again at the weekend. Nothing went missing on any other nights and I was open for Civic Week last year and nothing was taken."
At first Ian thought he might have been the victim of a Civic Week prank but when the dog was not returned nearly a week after, he said the joke was definitely starting to wear thin.
"It does make things end on a bit of a sour note. Civic Week was a great week for everyone so to have it end with something this is quite disappointing. I suppose you could say it's all part and parcel of running a pub that something will occassionally go missing but the model's quite big and it would be hard for anyone to take it without being noticed."
"It might sound a bit daft but the model also had quite a bit of sentimental value too as it reminded me of my pet Jack Russell, Tinker who died about nine weeks ago."
Although the mascot has only been missing a week regulars of The Commercial have already started asking "what's happened to the dog?" and Ian hopes that it will soon be returned to its rightful place in the corner of the bar next to the jukebox.
Anyone with any information regarding the mascot's whereabouts is asked to contact Ian at The Commercial Inn on 01890 882135.
