AFTER a succesful opening weekend there was plenty of events to keep people entertained during this year's Eyemouth Herring Queen Festival.
One of the Festival's new events, The Edible Boat Race, had worldwide interest and attracted over 30 entries and hundreds of spectators. The race, the brainchild of Marine Ranger Liza Cole saw vessels made from all sorts of ingredients take to the seas to impress a panel of judges.
The prize for the best design went to a "pepper outrigger" while the he most seaworthy was judged to be a coracle of slow-baked lasagne sheets. In the battle to be crowned the overall best boat, the healthy option of an apple raft, with cabbage leaf sail, narrowly lost out to the chocolate tart filled with sweets.

The overall winner, schoolboy Toby Smith, was delighted with his victory.
"My mum gave me a bit of help with it because I couldn't really do the cooking," he admitted.
"But I thought I wasn't going to win - because it tipped over half way through."
The week also saw large processions in the Fancy Dress Parade and the Pyjama Parade, led as always by the Eyemouth Pipe Band, who joined in the spirit of the parade by also wearing their pyjamas.

This year the Herring Queen Committee reintroduced the Children's Picnic and races, a reference to the original Peace Picnic from which The Herring Queen developed. The races and games were run by the Community Activity Team led by Paddy Dearlove, and despite the mist were enjoyed by all.

Favourites like the Pet Show, Car Treasure Hunt, Sandcastle Competition and Baby Show also attracted many participants during the course of the week.

The Committee would like to thank the 2007 Herring Queen, Kendal Smith and her maids who did a great job throughout the year, and are sure that the 2008 Herring Queen, Tasmin Mackechnie and her maids will be as good.
Although fog surrounded the harbour for most of Saturday, the weather did little to dampen spirits and as well as the Pyjama Parade there was an obstacle race for children along the Bantry, followed by the four legged beer race which also had its fair share of obstacles. The winners of the Beer Race were Team Rambo (Keith Douglas, Paul Pringle, David Windram), second were The Underagers (Megan Dunn, Kendal Smith, Amanda Young and third the Power Rangers. A fantastic firework display defied the misty conditions to bring proceedings to a close with a bang.
It's very rewarding to take part in organising an event such as this, but the committee are always looking for new members to join them. Anyone interested can contact Margaret Douglas on 01890750743 or through the website eyemouthherringqueen@yahoo.co.uk.
