CORNHILL pensioner Edna Jeffrey has won £1000 after being selected as a local hero by Morrisons supermarket.
The 78-year-old, who lives at Station Cottages, wins Morrisons shopping vouchers worth £500, plus £500 for a local charity.
Edna is secretary of Cornhill WI, a member of the village hall committee, a Poppy Appeal collector and helps out with the whist and carpet bowls.
She was nominated for the award by fellow villager Nancy Clark, who said: "She is one in a million and goes more than the extra mile to help someone.
"She cares about the welfare of all the elderly residents in the village; she sees our medicines are all with us in time; she takes us to get our groceries; and, if needed, she takes us to see our doctor."
Nobody will ever know just how much she does for charity and the people of Cornhill. She really is a hero amongst us."
The two runners-up, who each receive £100 Morrisons vouchers, are Shirley Weatherburn from Horncliffe and Stuart Whitton from Greenlaw.
