BERWICKSHIRE boatbuliders - of all ages - are invited to get their thinking caps on ahead of a major event in Eyemouth's Herring Queen Week.
Following last year's world's first hugely successful Edible Boat Race, Eyemouth is hosting another, more elaborate, event for 2009.
This year, children and adults from all over Berwickshire - and beyond - are invited to compete for prizes from an e
xpanded list. The Grand Prize will go to the boat that stays afloat the longest.
Liza Cole, Marine Ranger for St Abbs Nature Reserve, who had the original idea and who joins with the Herring Queen committee to organise the event, said: "This year it is a race to be last - the last to sink. Your boat must be made entirely of materials edible to wildlife, it must float for at least ten minutes but it must have sunk by the end of the competition.
"Last year 60 boats were entered and many people succeeded in making boats from food which were completely seaworthy so this year we've decided to present more of a challenge. So, to be eligible for a prize the boat must disintegrate and sink."
The judges will be Jennifer Doherty - owner of the Smokehouse Gallery - who is sponsoring the competition; distinguished artist, John Nelson, who will travel to Eyemouth for the event; and Liza Cole.
Award categories include children's, team, and "best-decorated" prizes.
Eyemouth's Edible Boat Race attracted world-wide attention last year and the idea is spreading.
Portishead in Bristol is hosting an Edible Boat Regatta on Sunday, July 12. The organisers saw the television coverage of the Eyemouth event last year then contacted the Herring Queen committee and Liza Cole and asked to "steal" the idea.
Liza said: "Of course we gave them the go ahead. It's a great way for people to get together and have fun without causing harm to wildlife or damage to the environment."
The 2009 Edible Boat Race will be held on Wednesday, July 15, and starts at 1pm. Entry is free and open to all.
Competitors are invited to simply turn up with their boats on the day on Eyemouth beach.
