A NEW drive from the Scottish Borders has been launched to put the region on the food tourism map.
Titled "Taste Scottish Borders", the campaign is being funded by Scottish Borders Council and Scottish Enterprise and involves bringing together all of the area's food and drink under one banner.
Awards, food festivals, individual establishments and food producers will be showcased in a bid to highlight the area more effectively as a top destination for foodie travellers and enthusiasts.
The food and drink industry brings in £144 million to the Borders economy each year and employs around 10% of the region's working population, making it a critical element of the area's economic make-up.
Renowned for the quality of its lamb, beef and game, the Scottish Borders also boasts some of the country's best hotels and restaurants including The Horseshoe Inn at Eddleston, which was named the AA 2007/2008 Scottish Restaurant of the Year, The Buccleuch Arms in St Boswells which won Scottish Inn of the Year 2008 at the recent Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards and The Black Bull in Lauder which was the AA Scottish Pub of The Year in 2006.
The region is also home to many speciality food producers including Border Eggs, Stichill cheeses and Peelwall's Cider, Scotland's only cider producer.
Nicola Watt from Scottish Enterprise said: "Current figures suggest that 22% of tourism spend is on food and drink related activities.
"In the Borders this amounts to around £62 million annually and so we believe it is vital to highlight our region's exceptional foodie credentials in order to take advantage of the important culinary tourism effect.
"Our area is home to dozens of fabulous eateries, speciality food stores and top quality food and drink producers from fruit and vegetables to game, meat, dairy products, bakers, wine and ales makers and even speciality cooking oil producers."
Councillor Vicky Davidson, Scottish Borders Council said: "Historic market towns are already growing in popularity as "food towns" within their own right, offering a fabulous mix of restaurants and speciality food shops, but through Taste Scottish Borders we aim to showcase the food we have right across the area.
"We want to attract more visitors here and also encourage more people to buy Borders produce when they see it in their local shops."
The Taste Scottish Borders initiative involves support for a mix of existing and new elements to the Scottish Borders food calendar including the well established Borders Banquet Food Festival, the Taste Scottish Borders Food Fair at the Border Union Show and the Peebles Food Festival.
