Help Georgia to Miss Earth title
Paxton beauty seeks your votes
LOCAL beauty Georgia Graham is among the finalists for Miss Earth Edinburgh and needs your votes to help her reach the next stage, Miss Earth Scotland.
Georgia, 18, from Paxton, is in her final year at Berwick High School and is in the running for the third biggest beauty pageant in the world, after turning down the opportunity to compete in Miss Universe.
But Miss Earth is not the usual kind of beauty pageant. It states on the Miss Earth UK website: "The Miss Earth Pageant contestants are informed, goal-oriented and committed to playing a part in preserving and protecting the environment for future generations."
Georgia told the Berwickshire News: "I'm a small person out to make a big difference and every vote would help me on my way to that!
"With everyone's help in the votes I hope to make the three Rs - reduce, re-use and recycle - something everyone knows about, to help save our planet and environment. It's not much to ask and costs nothing, in fact it saves you money!
"As well as helping save the environment, the money raised by the Miss Earth competition goes to the WWF to help save and care for endanged animals.
"For me, the animals make the environment. The rainforest wouldn't be the same without the sounds of the birds and monkeys, but sadly it is slowly being demolished and these poor animals are becoming homeless and the beautiful rainforest is slowly disappearing.
"Rainforests once covered 14 per cent of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere six per cent and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. We need to stop this now so future generations can enjoy our planet.
"Also, experts estimates that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest de-forestation.
"That equates to 50,000 species a year; this is a sad fact and if this doesn't stop, soon there will be nothing left, and the only place you will see some of the species will be in zoos and museums. Man takes everything from the earth - its time to give something back.
"I may not be able to stop everything harming our planet or save it, but i'm a small person on a big mission to help as much as i can!
"So if you're an animal lover like me and want to help save the environment then pick up your phone and give me a vote!"
If Georgia makes it through this round, she will compete to become Miss Earth Scotland and could then go on, if she is successful in the forthcoming rounds, to Manila in the Phillippines for the final, where contestents have to plant trees, attend various environmental seminars and educate people on the three R's.
Georgia is being sponsored by Cashmere, and will be wearing a dress at the Edinburgh final on May 15, made by EJP Design on Bridge Street, Berwick, and her hair is going to be done for the event by Julia of Aruba in Adams Drive.
To vote for Georgia, text Georgia Graham to 84205, or call 0901 6561574 and then dial 07
All votes costs 60p plus standard network charge. All voters must be over 18 and have the permission of the bill payer. Lines will close at 8.30pm on Thursday, May 15.
