THE Nesbitt/Nisbet Society held its bi-annual 'Gathering' at The Black Bull Hotel, Duns, on Saturday.
Fifty-eight members attended, including the Clan Chief, Dr Mark Nesbitt of the American N/N society, president Stuart Nisbet from Los Angeles and Maria Ruchardt (née Nisbet) from the Munich branch. The event was hosted by Major David Nisbet, the UK president.
Following the formal meeting, discussion and lunch, the members travelled by coach to Nisbet House and then on to Gunsgreen House in Eyemouth, built in the 18th century for John Nisbet, an Eyemouth merchant. Members enjoyed a conducted tour of the house hosted by professor Alistair Rowan, chairman of Gunsgreen House Trust, who had given the society a most interesting and informative presentation earlier in the day.
Col. Simon Furness, chairman of the operational management group, explained the workings of the "tea chute" and supervised the candlelit tour of the subterranean cellars.
Members were delighted to learn that the old signal tower or "doo-cot" is to be known as Nisbet Tower and will be developed to provide holiday accommodation.
The day concluded with a splendid candlelit dinner in the Black Bull Hotel, Duns. The next Nesbitt/Nisbet Gathering in Scotland will be held in Kilmarnock on Saturday, May 13, 2006. For anyone interested in joining the society, see the website or contact Mr Peter Nisbet, 7 Stafford Place, Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, BS23 2QZ.
