THE Berwickshire coast is an area well known for its water quality and now people are getting the opportunity to see this for themselves.
Former fisherman Jim Vanko has set up the venture with his boat 'Puffin', which has been a popular draw for visitors since its introduction a few weeks ago.
The boat offers one hour cruises around Eyemouth, St Abbs and Coldingham taking in all the sights and sounds of the east Berwickshire coastline including seals and basking sharks. And Jim admitted that it was an encounter with some of the sealife last year that first triggered the idea.
"I was fishing just off St Abbs last year on another boat and dolphins and whales were coming right up to us and underneath the boat. Obviously in a normal boat we weren't able to see them and I thought to myself that a glass bottom boat would have come in very handy."
As is typical with a number of events, the unpredictable British weather can play a big part and Jim is hoping that the rest of the summer wil be blessed with plenty of sunshine so people can see as much as possible.
"I've had over 30 years at sea now," Jim explained.
"And I know all too well that you can't really tell what it's going to be like from one day to the next. I've spoken to people who take divers out that one day you can see clearly underwater for 12 metres but then the next visibility will be down to five.
"With the glass bottom boat if the weather's good we'll be able to go right up to the bird cliffs and see guillemots on the ledges with their babies but if it's not calm we can't risk going so close.
"I was in Mauritius last year on a glass bottomed boat but unfortunately we don't have the same hot weather and the waters aren't quite so clear!"
Although Puffin has only been sailing for a few weeks Jim admitted he's so far been surprised with the wealth of wildlife the coast has to offer.
"I've been fishing these waters for a long time but going out on the glass bottomed boat has giving me the chance to see things you wouldn't see under normal conditions. For example last week I was up at Coldingham Bay and I saw some sand eels under the boat.
"I have felt for some time now there should be more sea based tourist activities based at St Abbs and Eyemouth. Holidaymakers are anxious to find sea based activities and I feel with the glass bottomed boat we are filling a very large gap in the market."
Jim will take Puffin out from Eyemouth harbour during the week and St Abbs at weekends, leaving every two hours from Eyemouth and every hour from St Abbs.
Tickets are priced at £12.50 for adults and £7.50 for children with family concessions available. They are available from D.H.Collins Fish Shop, Eyemouth on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; Ebbcars Café, St Abbs on Saturday, Sundays and Mondays.
A sailing schedule with also be on display outside both venues.
Bookings can also be made by ringing the ticket office on 07926 801215. For more information visit www.glassbottomboat.org.
