Pupils will help streetchildren of Peru
Bed push raises cash for trip

TWENTY four pupils from Berwickshire and Eyemouth High Schools probably wished they could have stayed in bed rather than push a hospital bed from Duns to Eyemouth on Saturday morning due to the freezing conditions.
They would also have been pining for their own duvet on Saturday night as they slept in cardboard boxes.
But in the long run their efforts will benefit both themselves and Peru's street children.
The group, along with four teachers from both schools, Doctor Gordon Sim of Duns Medical Partnership and Berwickshire Christian Youth Trust worker Michelle Livingstone, completed a 14 mile bed push from Duns to Eyemouth in aid of their trip to Peru in June next year.
Driving snow greeted the group as they met at Berwickshire High School, dressed in doctors and nurses uniforms, and a piper also welcomed their entrance into Duns.
The group then made for Chirnside from Duns in under two hours, with some motorists donating money as they past.
A stop at Southview Church was followed by a walk to Ayton before the final stretch to Eyemouth.
The group were fed and watered by Mackays before slipping into their cardboard box for the night in much the same way street children in Peru do every night of their lives.
Temperatures dipped as freezing snow and rain battered the group until Sunday morning.
Berwickshire High teacher Ros Currie was part of the group. She said: "Our kids like a challenge and they are going to have to continue this kind of mindset when we finally get to Peru.
"At one point we know it got down to minus two and the snow lay in Eyemouth that night (Saturday).
"It's typical that this would happen for the first time in ages on this particular evening but not a single soul whinged or complained."
The group are due to visit Peru on June 18, 2009 for a two week excursion.
In that time the pupils will visit Lima to witness the contrast between wealth and poverty in the capital.
They will then visit the jungle Scripture Union Centre at Puerto Alegria and medical boat Amazon Hope for an overnight trip down the famous Amazon river.
Finally, they will then get their hands dirty helping to build an SU centre at Kusi where they will meet the former street children.
The group thanked Redpath Tyres, Keith Hall, Berwickshire Community Safety Panel, Mackays, Loughs Bakery, Ayton Parish Church, Southview Evangelical Church, Shonagh Duncan and Sandy Mutch who helped out with their bed push and sleepover event, and to everyone for their encouragement and financial support.
