A BERWICKSHIRE village is celebrating after finding success in ITV's People's Millions.
The past few weeks have been a busy time for members of Reston Community Company, who had been working hard putting together the bid for their project which will provide a woodland and wildlife walk and environmental learning zone for the local primary school.
The project went up against another bid from Stranraer on ITV Border last Tuesday and after a nailbiting wait to see if they'd snatched victory, the people of Reston had reason to celebrate and their prize was a cheque for £58,400.
This was not only a fantastic result for Reston but for Berwickshire as a whole as last Tuesday's win meant that in the the past two years four bids from the region have been successful in the People's Millions competition.
Last year Coldstream and Chirnside won their head to head votes and Coldingham won as runner up with the most votes. And now Reston have made it a clean sweep.
Barry Smith, secretary of Reston Community Company, said he was delighted with the result and thanked everyone involved for all their hard work.
"We must acknowledge the great support we received from the Reston Community Council, the Berwickshire Association of Voluntary Services and Scottish Borders Council. We are really grateful for all their help.
"Then there was the incredible effort put in by the staff and pupils of the Reston Primary School and Nursery.
"I think their efforts secured the TV vote for us. The pupils really led from the front on this campaign."
The website used for the voting campaign (www.restonproject.info) will now be transformed into a website about progress on the project so everyone can see the progress being made, read the minutes of the meetings and be notified where and when the Reston Community Company will meet.
Conservative MSP for Roxburgh and Berwickshire, John Lamont praised the efforts of Reston Community Company and said he looked forward to the outcome of their project.
He said: "I was really pleased to hear that the Reston project was successful in the People's Millions competition last week. I know that a lot of people were involved in promoting the project and encouraging others to support it and they are all due warm congratulations.
"Coupled with the success of the Burnfoot Community School project (Hawick), which was also successful in the competition, it has been a very successful week for Borders communities. The Riverside Development looks like it will be a great asset, both to the local community and also to visitors. I am delighted that this project has won the support of the People's Millions scheme and I hope that the money won allows this great idea to become a reality."
