COLDSTREAM cyclist Rob Smith put all his efforts to good use last week when he handed over the fruits of his labour to charity.
Following fundraising cycles in both India and Egypt, Rob, who runs Howdens Pet Store in Coldstream, journeyed to Vietnam last year and pedalled a very impressive 1100 miles in just 12 days, scaling a cumulative height of 23,000 feet in the process.
His journey started in Hanoi and went through North Vietnam, right up the country's border with Laus, before following the Chinese border back to the capital city.
Rob did all three fundraising missions in aid of the Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association, a charity which is very close to his heart after he lost a cousin to the condition. He raised £3,500 from the Vietnam cycle alone and has now raised in the region of £10,000 in total.
Rob said that his cousin is a big inspiration and is the motivation behind him considering taking up similar challenges in the not too distant future.
"Being able to hand over more money to the Association means a lot to me and I hope that it will help someone somewhere.
"My cousin is the reason I do all of this and it's him who gets me up all the hills! I'm starting to get itchy pedals again and last week I read about a cycling challenge coming up in Cambodia and I could well be tempted.
"I wouldn't rule out a return to Vietnam either as there was a really good atmosphere and the local people were very friendly. I didn't enjoy Egypt and India as much, the conditions were a bit too hot and sticky."
Rob would like to thank everyone from the Borders and North Northumberland for their contributions.
