A DRIVER was clocked travelling at speeds over 120mph during a weekend campaign to target offenders on the region's rural roads.
As part of their 'Rural Roads Weekend', running from August 22-25, Lothian and Borders Police deployed officers on country roads throughout the force area in order to catch those still willing to take unnecessary risks behind the wheel.
And one of t
hose stopped was a BMV driver who was caught doing 122mph on the M8 - a 60mph zone.
The disappointing news for the police though that a further six drivers were caught travelling at 100mph or more on the A702 which runs from Edinburgh, through the Borders and into Dumfries and Galloway.
Superintendent Alan Duncan of Lothian and Borders Police said it was "disappointing" to find so many people driving at such dangerous speeds.
All the people who were caught were cautioned and charged and will appear at court at a later date.
Lothian and Borders Police, along with their colleagues from the country's other seven police forces, were participating in a Scotland-wide initiative spearheaded by the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland (ACPOS).
Supt Duncan said that even though the campaign had now finished, police would continue to monitor the Borders route in the weeks ahead.
He commented: "Driving at such excessive speeds on roads such as the A702 is highly dangerous, and poses a very real risk to other road users.
"We hope that the initiative that has taken place this weekend shows that this kind of activity will not be tolerated.
"Anyone who breaks the speed limit to such an extent can expect to be robustly dealt with."
Scottish Government statistics showed seven out of 10 fatal accidents happened on rural roads. The number of fatal and serious motorcycle casualties has also risen. Involvement in accidents by car drivers was highest for men between 17 and 22-years-old.
