GUY Learmonth from Berwick was in outstanding form in the Celtic Cup indoor athletics meeting at the weekend in Cardiff.
The Longridge pupil, making his senior debut at the age of 17, (the youngest in the team) competed in the 800m, where he won in a very tight finish against Gareth Warburton of Wales in a superb time of 1min 50.57sec, a new Scottish Junior indoors record.
This is the fourth time Learmonth has beaten the record this winter. This time takes him to fifth on the all-time U20 UK list ahead of distinguished athletes such as Steve Ovett, Sebastian Coe and Peter Elliot.
Learmonth also won the 'Athlete of the Meet' award for his outstanding performance at the Celtic Cup. He now goes on to the England U20s final this weekend in Birmingham where he will take on top athletes from England, Ireland, Northen Ireland and Wales.
Alison Brown and Hannah Jones, both pupils at Longridge Towers, have been in outstanding form recently and both girls have qualified for the England cross country finals in Manchester in March. They were also in good form at the Scottish national cross country finals at Falkirk at the weekend. Hannah won a team silver with Gala Harriers, and Alison won a bronze with her team, Edinburgh.
Cieran Turton was in good form at the weekend running for team Edinburgh at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow in the 800m. He finished in fouth place in a new personal best time of 2min 15 sec.
RUNDUNS are starting a new 10 week beginners' jogging course on Tuesday, March 2. Meet at Duns RFC at 7pm, cost £1 per session. Ccall Caroline on 01890 818416 for further details. Training sessions for intermediate and advanced runners also take place every Tuesday (7pm at Duns RFC).
