FOR the first time in almost 12 years, two Borders boys have taken the title of the SSBU U16 level boys doubles.
Andrew McQuarrie and Adam Don, pupils at the Berwickshire High School, played outstanding badminton at the Tryst Centre, Cumbernauld last weekend, clinching the title in an exciting final.
Twenty couples from all over Scotland took part in the very high standard event with the first round matches being played in a round-robin pool event.
Andrew and Adam were placed in the (A) draw after winning all their pool matches.
In the knockout matches, the boys beat Declan and Liam Doyle (Lourdes Secondary) 21-16; 21-15 to reach the semi-final where they beat the number two seeds Alexander Caughey (Preston Lodge High) and James Milton (Auckinleck Academy) 21-18; 11-21; 21-17 to reach the final.
After beating number four seeds Callum Riddell and Callum Stevenson (Bellahouston Academy) 22-20; 28-26, Andrew and Adam became U16 champions.
Two other Berwickshire High School pupils, Grant McWilliam and Jed Purves reached the quarter-finals after winning two games in the (B) draw but victory was not to be when they lost 21-17; 21-17 to Robert Dunn and Scott Jackson of Dalziel High School.
