BERWICKSHIRE High School once again proved their dominance at the Border Secondary Schools Badminton Championships, taking titles in every age group.
Several schools were represented at the championships, which were held at Earlston High School and Galashiels Academy on Sunday, January 31.

The under 14 pupils from across the region travelled to Galashiels, while the under 16's and under 18's played in Earlston.

In the U14's boys, the final was an epic three set match between Berwickshire High School's Gavin McQuarrie and last year's runner up Keith Patterson, also of Berwickshire High School.

A great game saw McQuarrie eventually coming out on top winning 23-25, 21-17, 21-15. But Patterson extracted his revenge in the doubles final, along with his Berwickshire High School partner Jake Drum, defeating McQuarrie and his partner Ian Richards 21-9, 21-10.

The girl's singles was a no less exciting affair, in a tense two set match Claire Hill from Kelso High School overcame stiff resistance from Berwickshire High School's Kirsty Millar. The result was a 23-21, 21-17 victory for Hill.

In the doubles event, which was a round robin competition, the Berwickshire pairing of Kate Ross and Rachel Scott won all their games to take the title from Kara White and Joanne Deuchar, also from Berwickshire.

The U16 girl's final saw both of the top seeds safely through to the final. Mhairi Deuchar and Lucy Nevin, both from Berwickshire High school, met in a final which went very much with the form book.

Nevin was in fine form and beat Deuchar 21-5, 21-18. The two Berwickshire girls paired up for the doubles, winning all three pool games. Runner's up were school colleagues Emma Turnbull and Lisa Kerr.

There was exciting play in many of the boys U16 matches and in a tense final of the singles, Andrew McQuarrie of Berwickshire took the game 21-15, 21-15 from Grant McWilliam, also from Berwickshire.

Some of the best rallies of the day were to be seen in the all Berwickshire doubles final. McQuarrie paired up with Adam Don to beat Grant McWilliam and Jed Purves, but McWilliam and Purves proved to be a real handful and were unfortunate to go down fighting by a score of 21-17, 21-14.

Moving up to the U18's, there was further success for the Berwickshire High School in both the girls' singles and doubles. Rachel Purves fought off a spirited display from Laura Rae, Kelso High School, winning 21-12, 21-14. In the doubles, Purves and Rachel Melvin were involved in great match with sisters Laura and Joanna Rae from Kelso.

The match was very much in the balance until Purves and Melvin got the edge in the final set winning 21-19, 14-21, 21-18.

In the boy's tournament, number one seed Ben Leslie, of Jedburgh Grammar School, made his way comfortably to the final where he got the better of Berwickshire's Stuart Thomson, winning 21-9, 21-16.

The doubles was another round robin series of games. There were several matches that went the distance but the Berwickshire pair of Alex Sim and Stuart Thomson ran out winners with the runners up place going to the Jedburgh pairing of Danny Etieve and Craig Gillan.

Event organiser, Neil Renton from the Sports Development Unit, thanked members of the Borders Badminton Group, Annabel Nevin and Ann McWilliam for their assistance in staging the event and making sure the day was enjoyable for the competitors.
