On what was a beautiful day for fast open rugby, with Duns having pace to burn in the back division, the signs were there for a Dingers victory. However, this was dashed when the proceedings soon turned into a farce.
The pitch was rock hard an
d the match official was not happy to proceed and the game was called off.
However, Broughton offered Duns the chance to play on the next door pitch which at best was three-quarter sized. After much delay Duns agreed to play which proved to be their undoing with their pace nullified on a very narrow park.
In a strange turn of events the pitch which the match official declared unfit, was declared fit to play by the second team match official. That game was played with one player having been carted off to the hospital with a broken arm.
The game kicked off with far from ideal preparations. Broughton absorbed the early Duns pressure and opened the scoring with a well worked try when they went over in the corner.
Robertson got Duns on the scoreboard with a well taken penalty and then Hutchison went over for Duns. Robertson added the conversion to increase the Duns lead.
At this stage Duns were well on top and everything was going to plan.
The Dingers continued to press as the half evolved but could not add any further points.
Broughton did manage to add to their points tally when, just before time, they crossed the whitewash after poor defence by the visitors.
This brought the half time score to 10-10 but the second half was all Broughton with the home side adding three tries of which two were converted.
Duns did finish well with Hutchison adding a second try and Robertson adding the extra points.
A very disappointing afternoon for the Duns team and hopefully one they will bounce back from with this week's visitors to the Hardens being Edinburgh Northern. Kick-off will be 2.30pm.
