THE second match in the Matt Purdie Trophy competition was held last Monday at Lauder when the opponents were from Fife.
Following the lucky escape last week when the Borders team earned a draw it was important to gain a home win.

With this in mind the team again started slowly and Fife gained an early advantage. With the first five ends completed Fife led by five
shots overall and there were two rinks down.

During the course of the next five ends the Borders team fought back well and turned the deficit into a four shot lead. There were now three of the four rinks holding a lead against their Fife opponents and hopes of a win were good.

With the available ends running out the Borders kept ahead until with the end of the game in sight disaster struck. One of the four rinks had the worst possible end losing a full house count of eight shots. This suddenly turned an overall shots advantage into a deficit and gave encouragement to Fife.

Having achieved this unexpected lead the Fife team held on and what had been thought to be a Border triumph became a defeat by two shots overall.

Once again the same Border rink emerged with a victory this being A. Hogg (Duns Park), D. Watson (Berwick) and W. Kerr (Duns Park) aided by D. McLean (Jedburgh) in the absense of J. Renton (Spittal) who was not available for this second game. The rinks won by 18 -8 preventing what might have been a bigger disaster.

This week the team will have the first of three away games the venue being West Barns and the opponents East Lothian. This will be a tough encounter but their hopes of progress in the league will depend on a victory.

On Saturday the semi-finals and final of the Top 10 competition were held. In the morning Gala Abbotsford faced Earlston at Duns Park while Hawick Wilton were in action against Chirnside at Eyemouth.

In both cases victory was gained by 8-0 for Gala Abbotsford and Chirnside respectively.

The final was held in the afternoon, the venue being Ayton. In this match early signs indicated a comfortable win for Chirnside, however, as the match progressed Abbotsford began to gain some momentum.

The singles, which often has some influence on the overall result, was a hard fought contest between Brian Anderson of Abbotsford and Graeme Forsyth for Chirnside. The result was a victory for Anderson at 21-18 giving the first two points to Abbotsford.

The fours contest was also going the way of Abbotsford but the pairs and triples were showing comfortable leads for Chirnside. This turned out to be the deciding factor with both teams earning four points and the result being on shot difference.

Chirnside had the superior total number of shots and became Top 10 Champions for 2010.

This will enable the club to represent the Borders in 2011 against other Scottish Counties and with the team they have it is hoped they will do very well.
