EYEMOUTH'S Niall Gibson is competing in the 2009 Island Games this week in Aland, and got off to a dream start by scoring the 90th minute winner in his side's opening group match against Gotland.

The 24-year-old former Eyemouth High School student was selected to represent the Western Isles earlier this year, when he became eligible after reaching the required six month period of living in the area.
The Western Isles played Gotland, the
Falklands and the Isle of Man in the group stages of the competition on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with knock-out stages due to take place today (Thursday) before Friday's final.
At the time of going to press Niall's side were sitting in third place in their group table, having beaten Gotland 2-1 on Sunday, before a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Isle of Man on Monday.
Before setting off for the Games Niall was feeling confident despite the gruelling schedule ahead. "The Western Isles won a bronze medal in 2007," he said. "This time we are determined to come back with even better."
The Island games is an olympic-style event in which teams from islands across the world meet to compete in a number of sports. This summer's Games are the largest to date, with more than 3,200 athletes competing in the Aland Islands, which lie between eastern Sweden and southwest Finland in the Baltic Sea.
Niall, who moved to the Isle of Lewis last year to teach PE, currently plays for Lochs FC, but has previously turned out for Berwick Rangers under 19s as well as Eyemouth United, Eyemouth High School and Berwickshire High school.
Anybody wishing to follow Niall's progress throughout the competition can do so on the Games' official website www.natwestislandgames2009.ax.
