AFTER the heatwave of the previous week, conditions were much cooler for the Berwick Wheelers' club 15-miles TT championship last Thursday, and a strong NW wind made the riders work hard on the way out.
Chris Isats and Harry Armstrong were once again out on their own, well clear of the rest, with Isats turning a 27 secs advantage at the turn into a 48 secs winning margin to take the title for the third time.
Doug Robertson took bronze in a time which equalled his PB and two others also did PBs. Neil Wilson improved by 31 secs while Eyemouth veteran Joyce Mark sliced three mins five secs off her previous best to retain the ladies title and set a new ladies club record time.
Riding much quicker than she has done in recent years, her time of 39.47 was approaching the level of form she last had in 1999 when she won the world triathlon ladies title for her age group.
Her ride was done on an unfamiliar bike as she was using clubmate Peter Simpson's Cervelo TT machine, but it obviously suited her ideally.
In order to beat Doug Robertson in the veteran on standard section you need to produce a very good ride and the big improvement that Joyce made was enough to give her the award with a plus of 4.43 from Robertson on plus 4.23 and Alistair Lockie on plus 0.44.
The event was also the sixth round of the TT league handicap and points competition and the first time that any distance other than 10 miles has been used. Joyce Mark scored maximum points with 28.24 nett from Armstrong on 29.01 nett and Isats on 30.28 nett.
Overall, Armstrong leads with 47 points from Robertson on 38 and Wilson on 37. In the ladies section, Alison Kerr now trails Mark by 7.5 points.
Isats was racing two days earlier in the Alnwick Tri Clubs 12.5 miles hilly club event at Alnwick where he now lives. Riding over the course for the first time he smashed the course record, lowering it to 28.08, finishing almost four minutes clear of the next rider.
15 miles club championship - 1 C Isats 33.51, 2 H Armstrong 34.39, 3 D Robertson (vet) 37.07, 4 A Lockie (vet) 38.19, 5 J Mark (vet lady) 39.47 pb, 6 A Beeke 39.49, 7 N Wilson 40.35 pb, 8 G Johnston 42.21, 9 G Nisbet (vet) 43.24, 10 A Kerr (vet lady) 44.03.
