THE Scottish Motocross Championship returns to Duns' Langtonlees course this weekend with double the excitement expected.
After being forced to cancel an earlier round of the Championship at Rhynie in April, the Scottish Adult Motocross Union (SAMU) committee decided to bring two rounds to Duns instead of the scheduled one.
This means Scottish motocross riders will
occupy the Langtonlees track on Saturday and Sunday, making it a gruelling but compelling finale to the season for riders and spectators.
Mathematically 12 riders could still claim the title and the £1500 first prize, with Longniddry's Neil Flockhart top of the points table going into the double header at Duns.
SAMU Chairman Rab Duncan said: "It has been some championship - we have had punctures, breakdowns and upsets.
"We have reinstated the cancelled race at Rhynie as a double header because there is no room on the rest of the motocross calendar.
"We were going to run with just five rounds but we decided the double header would create some interest.
"It will be a tough weekend with two consecutive rides but it is the Scottish Championship, it isn't suppose to be easy."
The weekend's action will be the last major competition of the year witnessed at Langtonlees, and course owner Dave McVie hopes the weather will behave itself.
Dave said: "We have our fingers cross that the weather shall be good - you don't mind a bit of rain as it means we don't need to water the track as much. But if it starts raining when the bikes are on the course, the hard pact surface turns into an ice rink - which can be exciting.
"The championship have been struggling for decent tracks and with ours probably being the best from the Midlands up they have decided to hold two rounds this weekend."
Changes are already planned for next year to the course, which hopes to host a round of the British Championship. A medical centre on site is planned along with possible improvements to the course with the aid of Grand Prix designer John Douglas Hamilton.
But for this year, the course will still test all within the high quality field of competitors, which includes a number of local riders.
Galashiels' Darren Scott is the highest placed Borderer in 13th place, while Innerleithen's John McNeil and Coldingham's Jason Martin currently sit in 19th and 20th respectively.
Jason said: "I have been training twice a week at Langtonlees and hopefully I can finish my season on a high. It is my first season in the Scottish so to finish in the top 20 would be a good achievement."
Other Border riders expect to line up are Jackie Munro of Peebles (27th) and Gordon's Ian Wilson (53rd).
Stuart Foster (over 30's class) and Liam Foster (schoolboys section), both of Coldstream, will also take to the start line this weekend, with Shane Williamson of Eyemouth competing in the small wheel 85's class.
"It is always good to see a good showing of spectators for what should be an exciting day of action," added Dave McVie.
Qualifying on both day's starts at 10am, with the first of the three championship races due to being at 11.30am.
