GUY Learmonth was in outstanding form at the English Schools' championships at Sheffield last weekend.
Guy finished third in the U19 800m in a superb time of 1min 52sec, a new personal best that takes him to sixth in the Great Britain U18 ranking lists for this season.

Guy took some notable scalps in his heat-semi final and final including some of GB's top 800m runners. Some of them are going on to represent Britain in major European competitions.
T
homas Atkinson, James Bowness, James Senior and James Hallas all had faster times on paper (1.50), but when it came to a race Learmonth was more than a match for any of them. His times in training had indicated that he was on for a fast time and so it proved with only Robbie Schofield, one of the fastest 18 year-old 800m runners in Europe and Michael de Laura proving too good for the Berwick youngster.

After the medal ceremony Guy and the other two medallists met with Dame Kelly Holmes, who stated that she hoped to see Guy running in the Olympics one day.

His coach, Henry Gray, believes he is a potential Olympian. He also said he would not make a statement like that lightly but he regards Learmonth as potentially the best 800m runner he has ever seen. He also said that Guy has only been training seriously for a year and the times he is already hitting are phenomenal in such a short period.

Guy was the youngest in the race and he will be back next year to try and win the prestigious title and break the English Schools' record of 1.48.8.

He will hopefully be accompanied by his team mate, Andrew Crichton, who can count himself very unlucky not to have been in the English 3,000m final this year.

Crichton was also in good form at the weekend in the Scottish League, setting a new PB of 2min for 800m and also running 4.08 for 1,500mtrs.

He goes on to Pitreavie to the Scottish championships this weekend to take on Calum Hawkins, one of the top runners in Scotland/Great Britain. Crichton is ranked number two in Scotland outdoors and it should be a fascinating clash over 3,000m.

Sam Atkins was unfortunately put out of the Jedforest sprint at an early stage at the weekend, but he made up for it by winning the invitation sprint. Cieran Turton was in good form winning the youths 400m and record his first victory on the open athletics scene. Laura Anderson, Calum O-Rourke and Matthew Grundy all ran well in their respective races.
