LOCAL athlete Guy Learmonth has been selected for the Celtic Games which will be held in Carmarthen in Wales this weekend.
Learmonth, who is 17, and who comes from Berwick, will run in the 4x400m relay for Scotland under 18s. He has deserved his place winning the World Youth Festival title in Gothenburg and finishing third in the English Schools Final recently.
He has also more than held his own against some of the top junior 800m runners in Europe, including Robbie Schofield, Thomas Atkinson and world youth champion Johan Rogestedt of Sweden.
Learmonth also ran well at the weekend in the British U20 league match competing for team Edinburgh. He won the 800m in convincing fashion from Gary McBride of Team Glasgow, who was one of the top junior runners in Great Britain last season, and Andy Richardson of Gateshead who was a recent England Schools' finalist.
Learmonth was also part of the successful 4x400m relay team and he ran 49.70 for the first leg. His team mate Andy Crichton also ran well and won the A race 3km in a good time of 9min 5sec in very windy conditions.
