FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Lesley Atkins of Gullane Ladies Golf Club is the 2010 Scottish Girls' (Close) Amateur Champion, having beaten 23rd seed Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) by 5 and 4 in a good quality final, played at Eyemouth Golf Club on Saturday.

A field of 60 young lady players, all below the age of 18, arrived at Eyemouth for the practice day last Monday. In the evening they met with the officials of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association to be told the rules of the competitions and be introduced to the scorers and umpires.

The club captain and lady captain welcomed the players and officials on behalf of Eyemouth Golf Club, followed by an informal welcome buffet in the clubhouse.

There were two flights of match play - the top 32 scratch scores qualified for the main championship and the next 16 qualified for the second flight, Ansley Reid Salver.

After a week of superb competitive golf at Eyemouth, an exciting championship final on Saturday, July 17, resulted in a win for Lesley Atkins over Kate McIntosh.

Kate birdied the first hole to go one up but Lesley had an excellent pitch and putt par to win the second hole before holing her 25 foot birdie putt on the third to go one up. The next four holes were halved before Lesley extended her lead to two at the eighth and then to three at the 11th hole. The short 12th was halved in pars before Lesley finished out the match in style with birdies at the 13th and 14th holes to win by 5 and 4. Lesley was approximately level par for the fourteen holes played.

In the final of the Ansley Reid Salver, Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus) played some of the best golf of the afternoon in beating Hannah Scott of Broomieknowe by 3 and 2.

The week's competitions were held in some rather unpleasant weather conditions but everyone was impressed by the spirit of the competitors and their unfailing courtesy and good humour.

"It was a pleasure to host these exceptional young ladies and we would be delighted to host the event again in the future," said club captain John Davison, a sentiment echoed by the lady captain Janis Davison.

They also praised the hard work and dedication of the Scottish Ladies Golf Association (SLGA) officials.

The club captain presented the Championship Cup to Lesley Atkins and the Ansley Reid Trophy was presented to Rachel Hanlon by the lady captain.

At the presentation, the president of the SLGA thanked Eyemouth Golf Club and its members for the warm welcome which had been given to the competitors and officials and had special praise for the greens team for their hard work and long hours during the week. She also thanked John and Janis Davison and all the members who helped during the week to make everything run smoothly.

Speaking after the competition, Fiona Cowan, SLGA championship director, said: "We were very pleased with the championships. The conditions were extremely difficult for the girls because of the high winds, but I think we got a very worthy champion.

"Eyemouth Golf Club were extremely helpful and most hospitable - they pulled out all the stops. Given the problems they had, with the tragic death of greenskeeper Mark Pagan, and the fire the week before the championships, the condition of the course was remarkable. We're very grateful to them for having us and everybody who was there thoroughly enjoyed their week."

The committee of Eyemouth Golf Club wish to thank the members for their patience and understanding for the disruption caused to their usual golfing activities.
