BERWICK'S Shielfield Park has always had a reputation for being one of the best football pitches in Scotland.
Now, head groundsman Ross Aitchison has a certificate to prove it.
For just recently he was named as runner-up in the 'Groundsman of the Year' competition for the Second Division.
Ross, who has worked at Shielfield for ten years - the last four as head groundsman - said he was delighted to pick up the award.
"It shows we must be doing something right," he joked.
"But in all honesty, it's nice to be recoognised for the efforts put in by the team.
"It's been a very wet summer and the pitch might not be looking as good as it normally does, but I suppose everyone has been in the same boat."
Ross was pipped for the top prize by Cowdenbeath.
"The competition had nothing to do with the stadium, just the turf," he said.
"The referees had to give marks out of ten before, during and after each match and there was also an inspection.
"I spend about three or four days working on the pitch after every game," he added. "It has to be forked, cut and marked, but the main problem here is the drainage, which as everyone knows isn't the best.
"That said, we always like to have the pitch looking good for the next game."
