THE Sharon Dougal Memorial Fun Run took place on Saturday, July 18, with over 50 runners and walkers taking on the 5km course and helping to raise over £1,000 for Brain Tumour Research.

The event was a huge success, enjoyed by all those who took part, and the first three male finishers were: First - Grant Wilkie, who finished the race in the quickest time of 17m 01sec; Second - Grant Noble, in a time of 18m 03sec; and Third - David Dempster in 18m 48sec.

The first three female runners to finish were: First - Morag McCracken in a time of 21m 01sec; Second - Ali Worrall in 22m 32sec; and Third - Lisa Gattwald in 23m 56sec.

The Eyemouth Herring Queen Leoke Spouse presented the trophies to the winners.

The race was run in memory of Sharon Dougal, who would have celebrated her 40th birthday this year.

Sharon attended Eyemouth Primary and Eyemouth High School, before studying catering in Harwick and becoming manager of Bakers Oven. She moved back to Eyemouth when she became ill and sadly died in 1991 after battling a brain tumour for two years.

Diagnosed with the condition when she was just 20 years old, Sharon received specialist treatment at Edinburgh's Western General Hospital.

After the loss of Sharon her friends and family decided to give something back to the Western General in Edinburgh, and to date over £60,000 has been raised from a variety of events - from christmas fairs and raffles to dances and duck races, and contributions from those who have ran marathons, parachuted and bungee jumped. And none of this could have been achieved without the kind generosity of the local community.

The funds raised in Eyemouth contributed to the opening of The Edinburgh Centre for Neurol-Oncology in 1999, which was established with a focus on patient care and research around brain tumours.

This year's 5k race, organised by Irene Johnstone and David Dempster, has so far raised £1,214 for the brain tumour research fund (Charity No SC005336), with donations still incoming.

Anybody interested in donating can send donations to:- Brain Tumour Research, 2 Barefoots Way, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, TD14 5AZ. Please make cheques payable to Brain Tumour Research.
