PATRICK Swan from Chirnside and Guy Learmonth from Berwick, did the Borders proud at the weekend in the Aviva UK and world indoor trials at Sheffield.
Learmonth, a pupil at Longridge Towers, was in outstanding form in his heat of the 800m, finishing third in a new Scottish junior record of 1min 50.98.

He was ranked third going into his first major UK senior final on the Sunday at the age of 17. This time he finished in fifth place in another new Scottish junior record of 1min 50.75.

This time takes Learmonth to seventh on the all time under 20 UK indoor 800m rankings in front of distinguished runners such as Sebastian Coe and Peter Elliot.

Learmonth now goes on to Cardiff this weekend where he will represent Scotland senior team for the first time in the Celtic Cup, and he is hoping to go under the magical barrier of 1min 50 sec for the first time.

Swan was also in outstanding form winning his heat of the 400m.He then dipped under 48 seconds for the first time ever indoors in his semi-final and secured his place for the final.

He was just pipped for a medal in the last 20m, running 48.2sec.
Swan still has an outside chance of making the 4x400m GB squad at the world indoor championships in Quatar in March.

You can watch Learmonth and Swan on Channel 4 on Sunday morning at 7.25am in recorded highlights of the Aviva world trials.

Meanwhile, Swan and Learmonth and his coach Henry Gray have all been selected for the Scottish senior athletics squad who will attend a warm weather training camp in Portugal in April.

Learmonth and Gray have also been selected to attend a training camp with former double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes at Loughborough University.

Learmonth would like to thank his sponsors Mainetti of Jedburgh for their great support.

February signalled the start of the UK hill and fell running season. Norham Running Club members started the season off in fine style with some impressive performances in their first outings of the year.

Firstly, at the Keilder Grey's Summit race, Les Turnbull turned in a strong running performance to win the super veterans category in a time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 57 seconds.

The 40th Carnethy Hill race took place last Saturday in the Pentland Hills to the south of Edinburgh. Allan Macaulay was first Norham runner, finishing in 266th position in 1.16.50. Rob Stankiewicz was 304th in 1.19.52 and Paul Marynicz 329th in 1.21.32.
