GREENLAW'S Lauren Waddell was in winning ways at the Scottish leg of the Four Nations Disabled Badminton Championships recently, taking the class three women's singles and mixed doubles titles.
The 17-year-old was one of almost 100 elite disabled athletes who descended on Scotstoun International Sports Arena in Glasgow to compete in the Scottish leg of the Championships, which were played from February 19-21.
Lauren, a pupil at Berwickshire High School, plays badminton once a week at the school, and is no stranger to success.
In the inaugural Scottish Four Nations Disabled Badminton Championships played at Largs two years ago, she won the women's singles title in class two of the learning disabilities section.
The 2010 Championships saw some of the country's elite sportsmen and women competing in the third annual tournament, which included four categories - standing, dwarf, learning difficulty and wheelchair.
Lauren, who was competing in the learning disability category, won the class three women's singles, beating Sylvia Moffat of Glasgow in the final. She then paired up with fellow Borderer Graeme Lang to win the class three mixed doubles event.
After producing three days of fantastic badminton, the winners were crowned on Sunday, February 21.
Depute Rector at Berwickshire High, Alistair Christie, said that the school were very proud of Lauren's achievement.
"She's chuffed to bits and we're delighted for her," Mr Christie said.
"She's got a great deal of kudos from it around the school and she was called into a house meeting and given a shake of the hand. We're all very proud of her."
The event, previously held in April, was this year pulled forward to follow on from the Irish and Welsh legs of the disability tournaments that had already been contested this season, with the English tournament due to be held from April 16-18 in Manchester.
Russell Hogg, development manager at Badminton Scotland, said that this year's entry of 98 was fantastic, especially in the Learning Disability section.
"Almost 100 athletes competed in the Scottish leg of the Four Nations Disability Championships in total, which demonstrates the increasing popularity of disabled badminton throughout the country, and shows the hard work that is being done across UK to promote the sport is paying dividends," Mr Hogg commented.
